Hogsback in the Eastern Cape is an all-year attraction and one of our most popular tours – we’ve been going there regularly every year for 2 decades!
Although Hogsback is a main feature this 9-day tour includes so much else. It’s an extensive round-trip that highlights the wonderful variety of scenery of the Western and Eastern Cape. Starting with the scenic highlights of the coastal Garden Route, we stay in pretty Plettenberg Bay, before heading east for historical Grahamstown. We enjoy the sights of this colourful town with its more than 40 churches and well preserved historical buildings. Later we travel the “Frontier Route” along the Great Fish River, where historical clashes between the colonial settlers and the AmaXhosa people lasted for decades during the 19th Century.
During our 3-night stay at Hogsback itself we visit superb private gardens, take walks in the hills and woods near our hotel, visit local artists and artisans, and enjoy in spring and early summer the exquisite displays of azaleas and other spring flowers.
A scenic drive through the Cape Midlands takes us through Cradock to Graaff-Reinet, with its old and well preserved architecture. Highlights in this area include a visit to the excellent Helena Rupert art gallery, quirky Nieu-Bethesda with its well known “Owl House”, and a visit to an amazing private fossil collection on a remote farm. Our route home takes us through scenic mountainous countryside and the well-known Route 66 with its many country attractions.
