Clarens and the Eastern Free State

The picturesque Eastern Free State town of Clarens is situated at the foot of Mount Horeb. It is surrounded by the beautiful Rooiberge, with the mighty Maluti’s off to the south-east. Autumn and spring are a good time of the year to visit. The tree-filled town offers a wonderful display of colourful blossoms in spring time, and surrounding mountains a green wonderland with the fresh light green willows. In the autumn, shades of the oranges, red and rustic brown of the Lombardy poplars is an unforgettable sight showcasing why the town is known as the ‘jewel’ of the Free State. In Clarens, you can spend hours exploring all the little town has to offer – the many art galleries, gift shops, and craft shops. Clarens is a haven for many well-known and established artists, and you’ll find various art galleries all over town, most of them around the square. The name Clarens was derived from an attractive village in Switzerland, situated on the Northern shores of Lake Geneva – near Montreaux, where President Paul Kruger spent his last days as a voluntary exile.

Day trips on this 6-day tour will include Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Witsieshoek, and Katse Dam in Lesotho (passport required). There is also an interesting dinosaur tour, conducted by a local guide.
