This 10-day tour covers the vast sweep of the Kalahari, with its superb desert and semi-desert scenery and magnificent dry climate. It is designed for those who like to savour moments of tranquillity and beauty, who love nature, and who find fascination in little out-of-the-way places (such as the great metropolis of Pofadder!).
We head north on one of the country’s most scenic roads – leaving the verdant Cape for the semi-desert of Namaqualand, staying near Springbok amidst the huge rocks. Next day we really do visit Pofadder, and Pella (smaller still!), and head off to the Augrabies Falls National Park. Here will be opportunities for extended strolls in the haunting ‘moon-landscape’ next to the river and canyon, and of course near the Falls itself. Or if you prefer, just sit still and absorb the silence.
We head to our major highlight, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (formally known as the Kalahari), jointly managed by South Africa and Botswana as a single ecological unit, providing 3,7 million hectares for endemic game to follow age-old migratory routes. We stay at Twee Rivieren camp, and then either Nossob or Mata Mata camps. The more remote rest camps have no restaurants, and we enjoy braais under the stars and tasty meals catered by our Landscape guide, and picnic lunches out in the veld. We will take daytime game drives. (Night drives provided by the Park are an optional extra). There is a fascinating diversity of life in this semi-arid environment, and your guide will shed light on many of the fascinating secrets of this wild place. We return via Upington and across the plains of Bushman-land, staying en route at Calvinia – a lovely destination in its own right.
