Karoo Highlands & Hantam (5 Days)

After numerous requests over the past year we are delighted to have a new tour to this remote and soul-filled area again. This time we combine our old favourites in one tour: the crystal clear skies of the Roggeveld platau, the scenic Karoo escarpment and the historical Hantam.

We stay in sleepy Sutherland for 2 nights, where day and night visits to the world famous South African Astronomical Observatory are undisputed highlights. We tour the different installations (including SALT) in the morning, and at night we visit an exciting private observatory, to gaze through a 16” Meade and a 14” Celeron telescope.

We tour the dramatic landscapes of the Karoo escarpment en route to Calvinia, center of the Hantam region. This historic town, with the cliffs of the Hantam Mountains as backdrop, is full of cultural interest and has a rich history of stone-age people, early herdsmen, pioneer farmers, Boer and Brit. We stay for 2 nights at the Hantam Huis, in a group of historic dwellings, each authentically (and comfortably) restored. There is good traditional food to be enjoyed and interesting and friendly people to meet.
